The event gained prominence in 1981 when it was featured in the World's Strongest Man competition at Magic Mountain, California, bringing it into mainstream strongman competitions. The modern version involves a barbell with boxes mounted on the sleeves, loaded with weights, and lifted from an elevated position. The starting height for the Silver Dollar Deadlift is 18 inches. This event remains a staple in major competitions worldwide, with the current world record set by CERBERUS Athlete Rauno Heinla of Estonia, lifting 580kg at the 2022 Silver Dollar Deadlift Championships.
